It all started at the end of 2000 when 3 Ticos, 2 twin brothers and their best friend, after hanging out for years during weekends and school breaks at all the beautiful beaches of their country got the idea to start a hostel.  Why?  After meeting foreign travelers, sharing stories, and getting their feedback, we realized there was absolutely no place in San Jose that was clean, safe, and cheap.

Based on that idea, at the beginning of 2001, we opened the FIRST  REAL hostel in all of Costa Rica.  With this new start we offered the best advice on how to travel around the country, but not only that, we showed these travelers what being part of the Costa Rican culture was really like and shared it with them.

Soon after, backpackers made our hostel their base in the city knowing that they would always have a safe and clean spot in the city to get accurate information and to have a cold beer.  Our location continued growing in popularity and even more so as the owners turned into party hosts and took their guests all over the city.  Soon after, we were advertised as the coolest hostel in town.

This led to others trying to replicate our efforts, but their concepts were different.  They did not possess the Costa Rican vibe that we did which kept people coming back to Pangea, our hostel.  This reinforced our ideas to continue to act as innovators and to give our customers a unique atmosphere with a one of a kind set-up.

We also knew that the reason our customers kept on coming back was because of our service.  For this reason, we started hiring our friends, all Costa Ricans, because what is more important than getting information from a knowledgeable source when you are travelling?

Years later, Pangea remains the number one hostel in the city and we continue to strive to improve it.  We then open up the only hostel with a real bar in it.   Furthermore, it continues to grow.  New additions are constantly added to include flat screen t.v.’s and new computers.  Our unique  rooftop bar is an other amenity that makes it hard for backpackers to resist.

Our success at Pangea led to the opening of other locations.  Arenal Volcano became our second project based on feedback from our customers.  The construction of this building took 1.5 years and is now known as a resort hostel because of its beautiful design and vast amenities.

So, six years after we opened, we were   still the best choice in the city and we now have a hostel network that operates throughout the country.  Our successes have won us the recommendations of travel books, travel agencies, and customers.  We offer our customers what no one else can and we are proud to be THE ONLY REAL HOSTEL NETWORK IN THE COUNTRY THAT IS 100% COSTARRICAN  OWNED AND OPERATED.
